I hate to start counting but my niece Jam just can’t seem to go a year without making a side trip to the emergency every time. This time it is high fever, dehydration and hyperventilation that caused her to have bad muscle spasms – making her stiff, unable to walk – leaving my dear big sister (the mom) to freak out. The worst part is, she refuse to take prescriptions all the time so off to the hospital, we go.

The confinement runs for 3 days. All necessary laboratory tests we’re performed, oxygen tank at her bedside while IV tube is in her vein all through-out the admission. Initially the doctor thought it was electrolyte imbalance but later concluded hyperventilation which she finds rare at her age of seven.

Jam’s hospital bed

What is Hyperventilation?

According to Wikipedia Hyperventilation (or sometimes referred to as “overbreathing”) is a state of breathing faster or deeper than normal causing excessive expulsion of circulating carbon dioxide. Because of the breathing patterns when hyperventilating, the air is moving in and out of the body too rapidly which, in turn, brings the level of carbon dioxide in the blood below normal. Low carbon dioxide level causes the calcium levels in the body’s fluids to also go below normal which affects the nerve; thus the tingling and dizziness. Stress and anxiety brought by various lifestyle risk factors are common causes of hyperventilation.

Going through all the descriptions printed in Wikipedia about this kind of health issue now made me understand better why the doctor called it “rare” for my niece’s age.

Traumatic experience can be a factor in developing fear or a phobia that may eventually cause one to hyperventilate at a certain point of their life. My sister believed the poor girl developed it while she’s still a baby. Without anyone noticing it, a drunken brother-in-law of hers once lit a loud firecracker inside their house where my then still a baby niece is fast asleep. That was Christmas and the couple could only react as much.

Going back to our hospital trip… there’s my niece on her hospital bed started screaming at the top of her lungs over insufferable pain for her, I can tell out from that leg cramps…her legs already swollen.

Would you believe how a simple thing, so light-weight brown paper bag helps the condition of my niece? My sister and I were indeed amazed! I couldn’t help to look it up and find out how it does magic to ease pain caused by hyperventilation.

To help her stop from feeling the pain, the doctor asked one of the nurses to put the brown bag on and let her easily breath through it until such time her legs starts to soften up. By breathing easily through a brown paper bag, you replace blown off carbon dioxide during hyperventilation. Then shortly she fell asleep. Amazing!

The following morning, though she still refused to walk, her legs already started to go back to its normal shape while the rest of our hospital stay was for her on and off fever and dehydration to get treated.

these tells the amount of medicines she had to orally take alone

All keyed up to check out the hospital on the third day.

That’s what I did this morning!

Seriously, this blog is made for Sheriff if you happen to know who he is. If you are with Payu2blog then you should.

I bought its domain on February last year and paid for a hosting service even. Unfortunately, the last few months of 2010 has been so depressing that I couldn’t even pay a visit to any of my own pages including this. Such a disaster every time I get that way! I feel sorry each time I allow myself to get on the edge because I always ended up losing what I would have earned.

Oh well, that’s another lesson learned.

This morning, I’ve come across with these tips again on how to win Sheriff’s precious approval. They’re actually pretty much the same tips with the ones I already have read before except for one thing that says about the kind of template or theme that meets Sheriff’s expectation… although it was also stressed further that it’s not a big plus but somehow it counts.

And talking about template shift, I actually have considered it already even before I have read those tips. I always prefer the simpler ones even to my other blogs and so this morning I’ve started the quest.

I got one thing in mind that bothers me though… will a template shift possibly affect a pagerank? I still need to find that out.

I shall be getting another stuffed box from JK and it is supposed to arrive anytime this week. I even wish for a notice from Mr. Postman to come in today so I won’t miss it when I go to Davao for some errands tomorrow.

So anyway, the Kadayawan week is already up in Davao. It’s been a long time since I last joined the celebration and I’m really aching to this year (with fingers crossed).

But on top of that purpose, I really need to renew my EON Cyber account at the Union Bank. It is about to expire in October and I want it renewed the earliest time possible.

Plus there’s more and I wish to leave tomorrow so I can get them all done and hopefully, just hopefully will get to enjoy the Kadayawan Festival highlights and other activities on Saturday, the 21st.

Slept and woke up late today. Mom is out to attend a two-day seminar in the city so I got more reason to stay home and keep my sister Thea and the kids company especially at night. But last night we chose not to sleep and instead play our favorite card games until five this morning. We only had coffee and of course chips and crackers to keep us awake. My niece Bernadeth didn’t make it as late as we did. She passed out after midnight. I know not a healthy sleeping time for a school girl like her but we sure only do it and allow her to stay up late during weekends. Not as often even.

So anyway, the morning came and so is the time of the month. Such a crazy way to greet the day! From happy now I feel so grumpy. But no I don’t want to take it out to no one so I just decided to go back to sleep after I took lunch, my first meal for the day which I wouldn’t have had if not for my niece, MJ who woke me up.

It’s past five in the afternoon. I thought it’s already a brand new day when I opened my eyes and rose from bed. I took a shower to freshen up and ate dinner after. Wow, what a feeling it was! I feel like I been from an all night drinking session. But I swear I wasn’t. If I were to drink, it is more likely just by my self which I so rarely do if not with a group like my cousins on a certain occasion.

Although, I would have loved to drink too last night but there’s nowhere near to get the kind of drink that we want. We don’t live in the city where some stores are 24 hours open. Besides we can’t just leave the kids alone just to get what we want.

Watching tv, listening to music and doing my finger/toenails were all I find interesting today. Although my day started right still I knew it’s not gonna last. Obviously blogging is not on the list. I tried squeezing my brain to write something after doing my nails but still nothing wants to come out.

And then from the city brother came home with a new iPod. He brought us burgers and fries too. Ah! That somehow filled my cravings. I gotta eat first of course because I know he’s going to ask me later to fill his new gadget with his favorite songs. Again, instead of working on a post, I ended up watching the local primetime series while downloading the songs.
